Dominican Republic 2026 Day 6
Hi everyone! Today we painfully woke up at 6:30am (just kidding we were full of joy). We began our devo’s and learned about how you can show God’s faithfulness through journaling. We split off and journaled on the days so far and reflected on how God has worked through the team. We went down for yummy breakfast including our favourite, mango! After breakfast we played pharisees which was super intense for only being 8:30am! After breakfast we headed off to the worksite, where we spent the morning shoveling rocks and dirt and levelling out the floor’s foundation for the new compound they are building. Some focused on working hard at digging while others spent their time looking for gold (Charlotte and the leader she dragged along). It was a lot of hard work in the hot sun, but we all found ways to be joyful, whether by singing at the top of our lungs or playing games to make the time go by.
We had the afternoon off thanks to the lighthouse staff! We ate lunch, swam and then headed to the market into the old city of Santo Domingo. The best part was riding the gondola, where some feared for their lives and other sang Spanish songs the whole journey. We walked through the city in groups, many stopped to buy ice-cream and frozen yogurt. Shoutout to angel for translating for 12 people! We went in many different stores where we bargained like our lives depended on it and many came out with unique souvenirs. The ride home involved us all showing our purchases at the market and bragging about the deals they got.
The team arrived back at the compound and we had THE BEST DINNER EVER! Chicken, rice, salad, brownies and yummy mango. Thanks to the lighthouse staff for serving us when the kitchen staff wasn’t there! After washing up we ran up the stairs to devo’s where we all changed into our Sunday best and spent time worshiping and praising the Lord. Some of us with jumping, singing and mosh pits, others with quiet moments alone spending time with God. A couple members of the team sprinted down stairs so they could get 5 minutes of swimming in before curfew. Where others spent preparing, or not preparing for bed (Sorry again Abby). We are so so so excited for tomorrow’s day of work, talking to the village kids in 67 jokes, eating and Charlotte hopes she doesn’t get bullied by the little six year old AGAIN.
